Saudi Arabia has sentenced eight people to life in prison for the murder of Saudi investigative journalist Jamal Khashoggi. They have been sentenced to various prison terms. The Saudi prosecution has called it a final verdict. Qatar-based Al Jazeera cited a statement released by the Saudi Press Agency on Monday (September 6).
Dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October 2016. Turkish fiancé হে Hetis Genghis was with Khashoggi on the day of his disappearance. Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to bring the necessary documents for the marriage. The Saudi authorities have admitted to killing him after a worldwide backlash over his disappearance. They claimed that the journalist was killed during questioning. However, no trace of his body was found. Saudi Arabia announced the execution of five officials in December last year, but did not name them. However, Turkey continues to investigate and prosecute the killings separately.
A statement from the Saudi Press Agency on Monday said that five people had been sentenced to 20 years in prison for killing Khashoggi. In addition, three others have been sentenced to between seven and ten years in prison.
Last May, Khashoggi’s sons said they had forgiven their father’s killers. That means that none of the murderers will be executed. Five of those convicted on Monday had previously been sentenced to death.
