Dhaka: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating the assets of eight MPs, including former Minister of State for Industry and Rajshahi-1 Awami League ruling MP Omar Farooq Chowdhury. The commission said a case would be brought against them if they could not show a legitimate source of wealth.

According to ACC sources, Omar Farooq Chowdhury has accumulated enormous wealth in his name and on behalf of his wife and children, whose information has already reached the ACC.

Five deputies were named in the government’s anti-casino campaign in September last year. The ACC intelligence team also received information about the enormous assets of these five MPs.

Subsequently, the ACC decided to register the assets of Shamsul Haque Chowdhury, Whip from Chittagong, Moazzem Hossain Ratan, MP from Sunamganj-1, Nazrul Islam Babu from Narayanganj-2, Nurunnabi Chowdhury Shaon from Bhola-3 and Pankaj Debnath, MP from Barisal- Four.

After that, in February this year, the ACC began searching for the illegal assets of Shahidul Islam Papul, an independent deputy from the Laxmipur-2 constituency. Papul’s wife, Selina Islam, a member of Parliament for the seat reserved for women, was questioned on the same charge.

The agency recently launched an investigation against Omar Farooq Chowdhury. The ACC has received information against him for embezzling government funds and acquiring illegal assets.

The ACC has received an account of the huge assets of the eight MPs from BFIU, the financial intelligence unit of the Bank of Bangladesh. These members of parliament have accumulated enormous wealth not only on their own behalf, but also on that of their wives and children.

At present, the ACC is classifying the information of the bank accounts and the personal and real property of the eight deputies.

Additionally, MPA Moazzem Hossain Ratan and his wife Mahbuba Hossain Lata sent letters to ten organizations, including RAJUK and the Department of Savings Certificates, last Thursday (October 8) seeking information on various assets. Commission sources said letters were soon sent to various organizations requesting information on the assets of the wives and children of the remaining seven MPs.

The ACC commissioner said. Mozammel Haque Khan said: “The income tax files of parliamentarians have been compiled. The investigation into MP Shahidul Islam Papul’s money laundering case is nearing completion. In addition, there are advances in each case. “
