Eight people, including a mother and daughter and three members of the same family, were killed in a head-on collision between a bus and two GNC autorickshaws in Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj. Another 10 people were injured.
The accident took place near the Shah Mushkil Ahsan shrine in Fultali Bazar in Gajnaipur Upazila Union on Monday (December 6).
Traffic on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway remained closed during the two-hour rescue operation.
The deceased have been identified as Samirun Begum, 28, wife of Abu Taher from Muraura village in the Gajnaipur union, their daughter Maria Akhter, 2, Halima Begum, 25, wife of Abu Taher’s brother, Anu Mia, Antar Mia, 22, son of Nurul Islam from Sataihal village, Sataihal (Kazipara). Liza Akhter (19) from the village, Kitab Ali (30) from the Latibpur village of Devpara Union, unidentified men (26) and Liton Mia (18).
Police and eyewitnesses said that a BRTC transport bus from Comilla to Sylhet (Dhaka-Metro-B-11-5518) collided with two GNCs from Aushkandi to Paniumdagami. The two GNCs are twisted. The CNG bus fell into a deep ditch near the road. Eight people were killed on the spot.
Ten people, including the bus passenger, were injured in the incident. The injured were transferred to different hospitals, including Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Upon receiving the news, Nabiganj Police Station, Sherpur Highway Police, Goplar Bazar Research Center Police, Nabiganj Fire Service and Shayestaganj together with two units started the rescue operation. The bodies of seven people were recovered in two separate incidents.
Sherpur Road Police (OC) Officer in Charge Ershadul Haque Bhuiyan confirmed the accident and said the rescue operation was still ongoing.
