BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the party continues to participate in all elections because it believes in democracy and not terrorism. But this government has completely destroyed the electoral system in a very well planned way. Not only the electoral system, they have destroyed all democracy. The Electoral Commission has become an incompetent government institution. That is why the election of December 30, 2016 was held on the 29th and in the darkness of the night they looted all the rights of the people.
He made the remarks while addressing a protest rally in front of the National Press Club here on Saturday morning.
Dhaka Metropolitan North and South BNP organized the protest meeting demanding the cancellation of the results of the by-elections of Dhaka-17 and Sirajganj-1 and re-election.
Fakhrul said the Election Commission was unable to cast more than 14 percent of the vote in the Dhaka-17 constituency despite showing so much terror, so much fraud and so much intimidation. But what a strange thing about this electoral commission! The Chief Elections Commissioner said: ‘The Bangladesh Election Commission is better than the US Election Commission. They can’t even announce the results in five days, we can get there in five minutes. ‘ This is because your results are already created. That is what you advertise.
He said these Chief Election Commissioners and the Election Commission have nothing to say about their shame-shame-shame. If they had been embarrassed, they would have resigned long ago. Today, they have become completely subordinate to this government of the Awami League.
Fakhrul further said that the bus caught fire at 9 o’clock last night. I have strongly condemned this act. We have said ugly and we want to say it clear, BNP does not believe in any terrorism. Until now, the BNP has been participating in every election because it believes in democracy. We believe that the government will change through the electoral process. I don’t even think about changing the government in another way.
He said, what has this government not done? They are illegally occupying power, the most popular leader in the country, who established democracy by fighting without concessions against the dictator Ershad, who established parliamentary democracy. He is spending his life in prison to establish this democracy.
Asking leaders and workers to be patient, he said: “Be united.” We must create national unity and snatch victory from the people. I will tell the government to resign; otherwise, you will have to say goodbye to all dictatorial governments.
The BNP secretary general demanded the immediate release of the arrested BNP leaders and activists and the withdrawal of the case. He also demanded re-election by canceling the results of the Dhaka-17 and Sirajganj-1 by-elections.
Amanullah Aman, Habibur Rahman Habib, Central Leader Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, Syed Emran Saleh Prince, Habibul Islam Habib, Shahidul Islam Babul, Rafiqul Islam, Akramul Hasan, the Dhaka-17 constituency by-election candidate SM Jahangir spoke.
