Earthquake shakes New Zealand, tsunami warning issued

New Zealand was rocked by a devastating earthquake. The United States Geological Survey said the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale.

However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement that the epicenter was reported below the floor of the Pacific Ocean; no tsunami warning was issued. Residents of Gisborne Island in New Zealand said they felt mild to moderate tremors.

According to The Guardian, the earthquake struck off the north coast of New Zealand on Friday (7:30 pm Bangladesh time). Residents of the coast have already been instructed to take refuge in a safe haven in the event of a tsunami. No casualties were reported in the incident.
