A notification on the university’s website on Thursday asked teachers and students to submit their comments and recommendations to the Google Docs form before January 2, 2021.

University authorities took this step amid discussions and criticism after news broke that the old building would be demolished in the TSC urbanization.

The statement read: “Under the kind guidance of the Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Bangabandhu, a former student of Dhaka University, initiatives have been taken for the general development and expansion of the Student and Teacher Center (TSC) of the Dhaka University. The expectations and recommendations of the esteemed teachers and students of the University are being invited for the development and general expansion of the Center of Students and Teachers (TSC).

“Before 02/01/2021 https://forms.gle/GnfMKXKS1NBVZGND7, the web link to send comments and recommendations is kindly requested.”

The government has planned to demolish the National Museum, the National Library, the Dhaka University Teacher and Student Center and the Dhaka Medical College Hospital adjacent to the university.

While attending a video conference function on September 2, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that she has ordered the concerned authorities to accelerate the modernization of these facilities.

Plans to rebuild museum, library, TSC, Dhaka Medical

Following this directive from the Prime Minister, the Dhaka University authorities contacted the government’s Public Works Department (PWD) last October regarding the modernization of the TSC. In accordance with the recommendation of the PWD, the university authorities have raised various demands to modernize the TSC.

It was recently reported that a multi-story building will be built demolishing the TSC facilities

There was a backlash among faculty-students and alumni of the university.

Leaders of student organizations, including many university students and professors, oppose the demolition of the TSC, calling it “a beautiful example of modern architecture.”

Wahiduddin Mahmud, a former economics professor at the university, wrote on Facebook, “TSC is a beautiful example of relatively modern architecture built in the 1960s. This TSC has a tradition of university cultural activities during the pre-independence struggle of Bangladesh. Instead of maintenance, it is being demolished and multi-story buildings are being built. Economists are only criticized for understanding the market value of everything, but not the true value of anything! “

University authorities, on the other hand, say they have been contacted by officials from the government’s public works department to update the TSC and aesthetic under the prime minister’s direction. Work is underway to formulate plans and designs for the modernization of TSC. For the first time, the Dhaka University authorities have formulated a ‘master plan’ to make the campus aesthetic and updated at the turn of the century.

As a former student of the university, the TSC will be modernized under the plan and leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said ASM Maksud Kamal, vice chancellor (education) of the university.

He told bdnews24.com, “The Honorable Prime Minister is a former student of this university. Always think of this university as your own. He said he wanted to see the TSC building of Dhaka University as a modern building. To that end, it has already directed the competent authorities to prepare the building design.

“PWD has already sat down with us and inspected the TSC area and facilities. Now PWD has designed it and presented it to the Prime Minister.

The final decision will be known later ”.

University Rector Prof. Akhtaruzzaman told bdnews24.com, “The Ministry of Public Works is investigating the matter. Speaking of my needs. Once the design is formulated, the Honorable Prime Minister will make the final decision. “

He said that when TSC was created in 1984, the number of teachers and students was low. Now that the number of teachers and students has increased, many socio-cultural activities take place here.

“It just came to our attention then. It will have to be restructured with another 50 or 100 years in mind in the future.”

When asked about the progress of the design, Public Works Officer Ali Ashraf Dewan told bdnews24.com, “PWD has held a meeting with the Dhaka University authorities. The university authorities have spoken verbally of various demands from the TSC. But the official was not asked to do anything. We have been asked to prepare for the design. “
