Meanwhile, battery-powered rickshaws and vans have been banned from operating in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) area since Sunday.
Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh inaugurated the registration, renewal and change of ownership of these vehicles at a function in Nagar Bhaban on Sunday.
He said: “Rickshaws are part of the heritage of the city of Dhaka. We are registering and renewing slow vehicles, including rickshaws. Our main goal is to put order on the road by registering these vehicles. ”
According to Dhaka North and South City Corporation, there are 69,554 licensed rickshaws and rickshaw vans throughout the capital. The number is more than 52 thousand in the southern city. However, in reality this number is many times higher than that of the experts.
After the 1986-8 fiscal year, no more rickshaws or rickshaw vans were authorized in Dhaka and the renovation was stopped. But it was not difficult to get new rickshaws on the road.

Many people appreciate rickshaws as an ecological vehicle. There is no alternative for short distance trips in the alleys of Dhaka. Furthermore, the employment of several Lakh people in Dhaka has been organized around this vehicle.
But as the main cause of traffic congestion in Dhaka, many people talk about the glut of slow non-mechanical vehicles, including rickshaws. That is why the two city corporations were in favor of gradually reducing the number of rickshaws in Dhaka.
When it was decided to stop rickshaws on three major roads in Dhaka in 2019, rickshaw shooters took to the streets. The residents of Dhaka had to suffer for two days due to its obstruction.
The committee formed by the Dhaka Transportation Coordinating Authority to control traffic was headed by the then Mayor of Dhaka South, Saeed Khokon.
At the time, he was in favor of removing rickshaws from the main roads of Dhaka, excluding alleys. We know there will be many obstacles to such an initiative, but we are determined to do our part ”.
Dhaka North City Corporation also took a firm position on the decision to stop the movement of rickshaws on all three highways at that time.
However, the workers of the rickshaw van suspended the movement after receiving news that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had ordered a separate lane for slow vehicles on the road at the ECNEC meeting.
Speaking on the occasion on Sunday, current Dhaka South Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said that work to ‘determine the effectiveness’ of vehicles on the roads in the DSCC area has already begun. Unregistered vehicles will not be allowed to circulate in Dhaka.
“We will determine which road slow vehicles will use and which road fast vehicles will use. Through this registration process, slow moving vehicles will be included in the registration and in the rules.”
He said: “We will specify your roads by registering them and we will also register drivers.” As a result, non-mechanical vehicles will be subject to discipline. “
Arguing in favor of non-mechanical vehicle registration, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said there has been no registration of rickshaws and non-mechanical vehicles in Dhaka for the past three decades. But his movement did not stop.
“The reality is that rickshaws run in Dhaka and they all run illegally. And putting it on record means putting non-mechanical vehicles under control. Through this program, we will register a certain number of non-mechanical vehicles, including rickshaws and pickup trucks. “

Executive Director of DSCC ABM Amin Ullah Noori, Director of Revenue Ariful Haque, Director of Waste Management Air Commodore. Badrul Amin, Brigadier General Health Chief. Sharif Ahmed, Chief Engineer Rezaur Rahman and Secretary Akramuzzaman were present on the occasion.
Recently, a public notice was issued for the registration, renewal and change of ownership of non-mechanical vehicles in the DSCC area.
He said interested parties should collect and submit a request for Rs 100 during business hours from September 13 to 26 at the Nagar Bhaban Office Building and Purchasing Department and Regional Offices. Registration can be done by submitting the prescribed fee in favor of eligible applications after verification and selection.
However, registration, renewal and property transfer fees have yet to be set, said Ariful Haque, DSCC’s director of revenue.
He told bdnews24.com: “A committee has been set up to determine the rates. They are working. We want to put a modern plate. It will be as if someone could trace the vehicle and understand whether it is legal or illegal.”
