Chittagong Divisional Commissioner ABM Azad addresses a protest rally at the Chittagong District Shilpakala Academy on Saturday (December 12).

Asking government officials not to take to the streets, Chittagong Division Commissioner ABM Azad said: “We who are government officials and employees have participated in this program. We weren’t supposed to be on such a show. Now we were supposed to be in the office, at work, in the field. This is our real job, the constitution has given us that responsibility. It is not our job to protest. But, sadly, the truth is that today we have to get to that position. We are here to convey this message. I say to those who dare to obstruct and destroy the Bangabandhu sculpture, you have brought us to the stage of the protest today. Don’t take us down the street. If you go out, you won’t exist. ‘

He was speaking at a protest rally at the Chittagong District Shilpakala Academy on Saturday (December 12) at noon. In protest against the vandalism of the Bangabandhu sculpture, officials and employees of various government departments working in Chittagong organized the protest rally as part of a national program.

At the rally, ABM Azad said: “Bangabandhu and Bangladesh are not only complementary, they are just two names of the same entity.” When the blow comes on that Bangabandhu, it must be understood that it is a blow for Bangladesh. A blow to the existence of Bangladesh. A blow to the constitution of Bangladesh. There is no possibility of seeing the blow on the Bangabandhu sculpture as a blow. This is a deep conspiracy pattern.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ilyas Hossain chaired the rally, CMP Commissioner Saleh Mohammad Tanvir, Chittagong Range DIG Anwar Hossain, Division Health Director Dr. Hasan Shahriar Kabir, Metropolitan Sessions Judge Ashfaqur Rahman, spoke District Sessions Judge Ismail Hossain, Chittagong City Corporation CEO Mozammel Hoque, and other government officials.

WPC Commissioner Saleh Mohammad Tanvir said: “We have to stop these wrongdoers for the sake of the development of Bangladesh.” Every patriotic member of the Bangladesh Police will deal with it professionally. It is very difficult to stop this irresistible Bangladesh in which Bangladesh has risen on the road of development. We would say that it is impossible.

DIG Anwar Hossain said: “Find out the background of all those who are threatening, those who are trying to destroy this portrait, what was their role in 71, 75.” The Bengali nation has defeated these different enemies in the past and will continue to do so. But my question is why in this independent country, even after so many days of independence, in 49 years, this force has risen up again to strike the portrait of Bangabandhu? Hitting Bangabandhu’s portrait means hitting Bangladesh. Those who did not want Bangladesh, those who colluded with Pak’s attackers, are today involved in a deep conspiracy.

He further said: ‘The defeated power of 71 has not yet disappeared. They beat up Bangabandhu’s family in ’75 after being defeated in ’71. And now that the country is advancing under the skillful leadership of Bangabandhu’s daughter, they are trying to make something happen again.

Metropolitan Sessions judge Ashfaqur Rahman said: “We are judges, we are not stones or geniuses, we are also human beings.” When Bangabandhu’s sculpture is broken, our hearts also bleed. ‘ He said that the beauty of Islam is that wherever the Companions went to preach Islam, they embraced the culture of that place. But now some fundamentalist groups don’t want to understand that. Islam has never spread and spread by force. Islam has spread through its beauty. Some intolerant and ignorant people are destroying our respect for Islam because they don’t understand it. This is a group of countries in the world that have taken the initiative, they are not the country, but I think they have done more damage to Islam. They don’t know how little they know.
