Ten members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have lost their jobs due to positive drug tests and drug-related accusations. 17 people have been suspended. In total, 6 policemen tested positive for drugs. This is the first time such measures have been taken against so many policemen at the same time. Of the six defendants, 50 are police officers, five are naiks, five are assistant deputy inspectors, one is a sergeant and seven are deputy inspectors.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesman Walid Hossain confirmed the matter on Sunday (November 22). He said that the police headquarters are taking action against these policemen who have the rank of deputy sheriff’s inspector for the drug use charge. Several of them have finally been dismissed.
He added that of the six accused so far, 10 have finally been dismissed and 18 have been suspended. Apart from this, departmental cases have been filed against 43 people. The departmental action process is underway against another 25 people.
According to the police, 29 more people have been charged with drug trafficking, sale and recovery of drugs. Six of them have been convicted. In addition, 10 people have been charged with selling drugs, five with consuming drugs, 10 with drug trafficking and four with showing less of the recovered drugs.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Moha in this regard. Shafiqul Islam said: ‘We want the police to get out of the drug cycle completely. Those in the police who are involved in drugs will not receive any exemptions.
