The director of Jatrabari Madrasa, Maulana Mahmudul Hasan, has been elected the new chair of the Bangladesh Board of Education Qaumi Madrasa (BEFAC).
The election was held at the Bangladesh Board of Education Qawmi Madrasa headquarters in Kajla in Jatrabari on Saturday. Members of Majlish e Amela (Executive Committee) and Majlish e Surah participated in the election.
Mahmudul Hasan, known as a supporter of the government, got 63 votes and Nur Hossain Kasemi, a supporter of the 20-party alliance led by the BNP, got 55 votes.
Maulana Mahmudul Hasan was a former Khatib of the Gulshan Azad Mosque. Nur Hossain Qasemi is the general secretary of Jamaat-e-Ulama Islam, one of the organizations of the 20-party alliance led by BNP and the convener of the Hefazat-e-Islam Dhaka branch.
Following the death of Shah Ahmad Shafi on 18 September, the post of Chairman of the Board of Education of Qawmi Madrasas, Befaqul Madarisil Arabia (BEFAC), became vacant.
The chairman of Befaq will be the chairman of Al-Hayatul Ulaya Lil-Jami’atil Qawmiya, a body formed by the government to test hadiths at the highest level of Qawmi Madrasa.
Ahmed Shafi died a day after resigning as CEO of Hathazari Madrasa in Chittagong after a two-day student movement.
Subsequently, several Hefazat leaders told The Daily Star, on condition of anonymity, that both the government and the opposition were trying to make one of their loyal scholars the chairman of Befaq.
