Syed Mahbub-e-Khoda Dewanbagi, founder and owner of Dewanbagh Darbar Sharif in the capital’s Motijheel, has passed away (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilahi Raziun). He died at 6:48 a.m. on Monday (December 26). He was 80 years old at the time of his death.

He had a stroke at home around 7.45 this morning. He was later pronounced dead at United Hospital. The body has been taken to Arambagh. Family sources of the deceased have confirmed this information to the media. His death has also been confirmed on Dewanbagh Sharif’s Facebook page.

According to the Dewanbagh Sharif website, the Dewanbagi Pir’s name is Mahbub-e-Khoda. However, he is known as ‘Dewanbagi’. He was born on December 14, 1949 in the Bahadurpur village of Ashuganj upazila in Brahmanbaria. His father’s name was Syed Abdur Rashid Sardar. Mother Syeda Jobeda Khatun. He is the youngest of six brothers and two sisters. He studied from Karimia Alia Madrasa in Talshahar to Fazil.

Dewanbagi Pir took the promise into the hands of Abul Fazal Sultan Ahmed Chandrapuri, the founder of Chandrapara Darbar in Faridpur. Dewanbagi later married his daughter Hamida Begum.

Because of this, he obtained the caliphate from his father-in-law. Soon after, he built a dormitory at Dewanbagh in Narayanganj and introduced himself as a Sufi emperor. The last Dewanbagi Pir established a Durbar at 146 Arambagh, Motijheel, Dhaka-1000.

Rumors of his death previously spread in February 2016. He was treated at United Hospital for several days at the time, but news of his death was inaccurate.
