Destruction of expired medicines worth Tk 30 crore, fine of Tk 6 crore

From January to October this year, a mobile court has imposed a fine of Tk 6 crore 26 lakh 10,203 for storing expired, counterfeit, unregistered and adulterated drugs. In addition, as of July this year, expired drugs worth 30.14 million Tk have been destroyed, including four days in July last year. The latest report submitted to the court by the Department of Drug Administration contains such information.

A report was published in Prothom Alo on June 11 of last year entitled “93 percent of expired drugs in pharmacies.” Mahfuzur Rahman, executive director of the Justice Watch Foundation and attorney for the Supreme Court, filed the petition last year seeking instructions to recall, seize and destroy expired drugs from the market, citing media reports. The Superior Court ruled on June 18 of last year with a preliminary hearing.
