Unemployed workers of the district bus, minibus, coach and minibus workers union have blocked the road in Panchagarh demanding the introduction of public transport. Hundreds of emergency items vehicles were stranded on either side of the road.
Workers blocked the Panchagarh-Dhaka highway at the city’s Chowrangi junction from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday. At this time many people lay down on the road. Hundreds of emergency vehicles were also stranded on either side of the road.
Upon receiving the news, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi (UN) official Golam Rabbani and representatives of the local population went to the scene to provide aid to the workers and made sure to take strict measures against vehicles that violate the closing instructions. .
According to protesting workers, they have been inactive for approximately 45 days since the government announced the closure of public transportation. Her family is having a lot of trouble borrowing money. They did not get help from the government. Of the 2,500 district workers, only 100 workers in the Panchagarh municipality obtained 10 kg of rice, which is also out of stock. Some workers complained that even union leaders did not support them.
Workers claim that the government is slowly relaxing everything. Markets are opening. Cargo trucks move, people move in small vehicles, and not just passenger buses. Claiming they were being treated unfairly, they said, either the relief side or the bus side.
The protesting bus driver Rafiz Uddin said: “All vehicles circulate on behalf of the transport of emergency goods.” Just don’t let our bus go. We have been unemployed for 45 days. I cannot get food for my wife and children. There is no one to see how much trouble we are in. If you can’t give us relief, let us run the bus.
Monir Hossain, highway secretary of the Panchagarh District Bus, Minibus, Coach and Minibus Workers Union, said: “The total number of workers in our organization is 2,500 in five district upazilas.” After the bus service stopped, the workers’ union gave him five kg of rice. There are 600 workers in the Panchagarh municipality area alone, of whom 100 workers obtained 10 kg of rice from the municipality. “He said the blockade was lifted after the administration sent a list of workers based on upazila and secured relief assistance.
The UN Golam Rabbani said the workers had blocked the road demanding the introduction of public transport. They were told that it would not be possible without the central leadership of the government. Apart from this, workers who did not receive relief assistance will receive relief assistance in phases.
