Demonstration in Gazipur demanding wage arrears

Workers at a handicraft factory called Style Crafts Limited in three road areas of the metropolis of Gazipur again demanded payment of the arrears on Friday.

Gazipur Industrial Area Police Inspector Sameer Chandra Sutradhar said the agitated workers started protesting blocking the Dhaka-Gazipur highway in front of the factory starting at 7.30am. The police are working to control the situation, the road blockade caused long traffic jams on both sides of the road. Workers blocked the road from noon to 9 pm on Thursday demanding the same. That night, the factory owner and members of the security forces fired brick bats at the factory gate to talk to workers about wages through a microphone. Rezwanul Islam, ADC of the Gazipur Metropolitan Police on duty and Wahiduzzaman, Executive Magistrate of Gazipur were slightly injured. Later, when the police took control of the situation, the workers abandoned the roadblock.

On Friday morning, at the factory gate, workers were excited to see a notice announcing a three-day holiday, including the payment of November pay on January 8. They set up a blockade on the nearby Gazipur highway. Discussions with workers are resumed to control the situation.
