Labor leader Tapan Saha said at the rally: ‘Garment workers are working in factories at the risk of their lives during the Corona epidemic. Production has continued. At that time, a conspiracy has been started not to increase the annual salary of workers with a crown excuse. We want to say that the annual salary increase for workers should be announced as soon as possible.

Union leaders also said at the rally that women workers in the garment industry are constantly being subjected to various forms of harassment, including sexual harassment. Those who persecute should receive exemplary punishment.

The demonstration was held in front of the Press Club on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Federation of Textile Workers. Union leaders Nure Alam Khan, Selim Hossain, Mizanur Rahman, Zahidul Islam, Shah Alam, Parveen Begum and others addressed the rally.

BKMEA, one of the two largest organizations in the garment industry, wrote a letter to State Labor Minister Begum Mannujan Sufian on Sunday. The letter, signed by AKM Selim Osman, president of the organization, said that due to the situation in Corona, it has become impossible to pay workers’ salaries and allowances regularly. For the first time in 2013, the minimum wage board made it mandatory for workers to pay an annual increase of 5 percent of their base wage. It was subsequently kept in the 2016 salary structure. Under the current structure, the total salary of a 7th grade worker is eight thousand rupees. The basic salary is 4,100 rupees. If you get an annual increase, the basic salary will increase by 205 rupees. And the rent for the house will increase by 102 rupees 50 paise. In total, workers’ wages will increase by 308 rupees 50 paise. Salaries in other grades will also increase at the same rate.
