Locals have come together to demand a change in the design of the Akhaura section of the proposed four-lane Ashuganj-Akhaura highway in Brahmanbaria. The persecution took place at Gazi Bazar in Akhaura on the Akhaura-Agartala highway on Monday morning. Hundreds of people from seven Dakshin Union villages of the Upazila participated in the human chain holding banners and festoons hand in hand.

Some area residents said the proposed highway is being taken in seven towns with a one-mile curve without taking it directly from Tulabari in Mogra Union. They complained that if the road is implemented according to the current design, many houses, including three mosques, three markets, seven cemeteries and three Eidgahs in the southern junction, will be washed away by the four-lane highway. It will affect thousands of people in the villages of Char, Satpara, Dwijaypur, Anandapur, Rahimpur, Birchandrapur and Sahebnagar in the southern union. They claim that if the road is built with a slight change in design, markets, mosques, cemeteries, houses and other structures will be protected. This will also reduce the distance from the road and save the government Rs 150 million.
