A court granted three days of preventive detention to three defendants, including the president of the Juba League, in a case of vandalism of the bust sculpture of the anti-British revolutionary leader Jatindranath Mukherjee (Bagha Jatin). The detainees are Anichur Rahman Anich, 35, son of Mohiruddin Sekh, a resident of Kaya Fultala village, president of Kaya Union Juba League of Kumarkhali upazila, Sabuj Hossain, 20, son of Nasir Uddin and Hridoy Hossain, 20, son of Buddin Mandal. Kushtia’s senior judicial magistrate Selina Khatun approved the order after a pretrial detention hearing at 12 noon Monday. Earlier on the night of December 19, the Kumarkhali police arrested three defendants in the case and handed them over to the court with a request for a seven-day pre-trial detention.
Kumarkhali Police Officer in Charge (OC) Mojibur Rahman said the three defendants arrested in a case brought by the principal of Kaya College under the Special Powers Act in connection with the vandalism of the bust sculpture of ‘Jatindranath Mukherjee (Bagha Jatin)’ were sent to court. The wise court granted pretrial detention for 3 days after the pretrial detention hearing on Monday (December 21).
Meanwhile, the local citizens council has gathered to protest the demolition of the Bagha Jatin sculpture. The rally was held at the school premises at 11 am on Monday. Kumarkhali Citizens Council Chairman Akram Hossain chaired the protest meeting and lawyer Selim Altaf George, Member of Parliament for the Kushtia-4 constituency, chaired the meeting. Special guests were Police Super SM Tanvir Arafat, Kumarkhali Municipal Mayor Shamsuzzaman Arun, and ATM freedom fighter Abul Mansur Majnu. People of various classes and professions from the area participated in the meeting. They also vigorously protested and condemned the incident.
It can be mentioned that on Friday night (December 16), a sculpture by Bagha Jatin was vandalized on the premises of Kaya College in Kushtia’s Kumarkhali Upazila. The following day, the police arrested three people, including the president of the Juba League, and sent them to court.
