Police have recovered the body of an unidentified middle-aged woman from the launch of the MV Parabat-11 on the Barisal-Dhaka route. The body was recovered from a cabin on the third floor of the boat anchored in the river port of Barisal on Monday morning. Al-Mamunul Islam, an inspector with the Barisal CID crime scene unit, said the woman had been strangled to death after being raped. The killer could be identified after viewing CCTV footage, but has not yet been arrested.
Said the local official of the Parabat launch company. Selim said a man from Sadarghat in the capital took the woman to the single cabin number 391 on the third floor of the launch on Sunday night. Her name is mentioned in the launch record as Kamrul. When the boat anchored in the river port of Barisal at 4:48 am yesterday, the man got off quickly. He wore a mask and a bag tied to the woman’s veil.
Abdullah Al Mamun, OC of the Barisal Sadar Naval Police Station, said the passengers got off the boat after anchoring yesterday morning. Subsequently, the launch staff went to check the cabin and found the body of the passenger in cabin number 391 and reported it to the police. The police went and recovered the body of the woman wearing a salwar-kameez from inside the hut. However, the identity of the woman could not be immediately confirmed.
