The court granted a four-day pre-trial detention to police officer Hasan Ali, the main defendant in the murder of a disabled motorist Nazmul Islam in the Kortpara area of Rangpur city. At the same time, the court ordered his wife Sathi Begum to be interrogated in jail for two days. Rangpur Senior Judge Fazle Elahi approved the order on Wednesday (December 30) at noon. The CSI Monowar Hossain court has confirmed the preventive detention.
It is worth mentioning that on 23 December a rickshaw belonging to the police officer Hasan Ali who worked at the Rangpur Police Training Center was stolen. Hasan brought home the disabled Nazmul Islam on suspicion of being a thief. Then he was tortured all night. When he died, Hasan Ali and his wife Begum attempted suicide by hanging the body from the ceiling of their house.
After fierce protests by local residents Hasan Ali and his wife Begum were arrested together. The victim’s wife, Shyamoli Begum, filed a case at the city’s Tajhat Police Station. But the police did not register the case as a murder case, instead presenting a case of incitement to suicide. Protests over the incident, the police charged with blocked roads for 7 days in pretrial detention for questioning. The court ordered pretrial detention after a hearing on Wednesday.
Tajuz Police Station OC Akhtaruzzaman said the defendant Hasan Ali would be taken out of jail and questioned to try to unravel the mystery of the incident. He also said that his wife would be questioned in jail.
