Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has been running a squash program for five days to save the people of the capital from the mosquito infestation, which will continue until March 16. However, locals complained that this program is not useful for killing mosquitoes. In this situation, the rain will give city dwellers little relief, the researchers say. They claim that the flying Culex mosquito dies due to stormy rain. As a result, the mosquito infestation may decrease in the next few days. However, due to light rains, the incidence of Culex has decreased slightly, but there are fears that the number of Aedes mosquitoes will increase.

To give some relief to the people of the capital in the heat, yesterday afternoon was like a downpour. According to meteorological sources, the amount of rain in the capital yesterday was three millimeters. Although people temporarily enjoy the rain, it may increase the prevalence of Aedes mosquitoes in the capital. This is what entomologists fear.

Professor of Zoology at Jahangirnagar University. Kabirul Bashar said that some Culex mosquitoes can die in yesterday’s light rain. However, this rainwater collects in different containers where Aedes mosquitoes can spread. In particular, several sinks (pots for washing hands) have been provided in different parts of the capital for corona, which can collect water. Other than that, there are a lot of empty bottles or cans thrown on the road with trash. If rainwater is allowed to accumulate in them, Aedes will grow there. As a result, the city corporation has to act now. All water storage containers must be inverted. From now on, it may occasionally rain in the capital. As a result, the researcher also cautioned that everyone should be aware before the Aedes breeding season.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Dhaka North, Atiqul Islam, has said that there is a negligence in the responsibility of the councilors behind the increase of mosquitoes in the capital. He also claimed that everyone is negligent in this case. The northern mayor said this while inspecting the DNCC’s mosquito eradication squash program in the Bhatara area of the city around 9am yesterday.

The DNCC has been running a special mosquito eradication program in the capital since March 6. Yesterday was the fifth day of this activity. The DNCC team started the mosquito eradication squash program from the 100-foot road in front of the Bhatara Police Station starting at 8am on Saturday. Mayor Atiqul arrived shortly after the start of the campaign. The roads were very clean before the arrival of the mayor. The clean campaign was also in front of the mayor. The mayor visited the Bhatara area. Responding to a question from reporters about the progress of mosquito eradication at the time, Mayor Atiqul said: “The Culex mosquito infestation has now increased in the capital. North City Corporation is making every effort to control it. It will take a little time. We are conducting operations in different areas of DNCC to kill mosquitoes. 1,400 mosquito exterminators are working simultaneously on this operation.

Later, the mayor visited the Dumni area of District 43 to inspect the mosquito eradication program. There, the team leading the shock program found mosquito larvae in a pond behind the office of the Shariful Islam Bhuiyan District Councilor. The mayor expressed his anger at the incident. He said: ‘We have seen in this campaign that mosquito breeding occurs more in privately owned bodies of water. The owner must keep these places clean at his own risk. Otherwise, regular cases will be filed against you.

In this regard, Councilor Shariful Islam Bhuiyan said: ‘Sometimes we make it clear. But this place is actually a pond. When it rains here, the water freezes. The place where the larvae were found today (Saturday) is actually a privately owned place. During the visit, among others, the executive director of DNCC, Selim Reza, the secretary Rabindranath Barua, the general director of health, the brigadier general. DBCC officials were present, including Jobaidur Rahman, District 40 Councilor Nazrul Islam Dhali.
