Councilors in the dirty trade | The first light

Why occupation-eviction

According to the garbage collection workers of different organizations, those who collect garbage from home every day have a monthly salary of around 3-6 lakhs. And there are van costs. For example, if a councilor or his people collect rubbish from 2,000 floors and collect Rs 150 per month, then their monthly income is Rs 3 lakhs. 4-5 vans and 6 workers will be needed. Excluding your salary and the cost of a small truck, the rest of the money is profit. Even if the cost is one third, the profit is Rs 2 lakh per month.

Trade worth Rs 344 crore in North City is located in just 54 districts. The average amount of garbage business in each district is 6 crore 36 lakh rupees per year. As a result, the affected people fear more chaos in front of the land.

Initiatives to introduce new methods

In this situation, North City will cede responsibility for garbage collection to one organization in a neighborhood through tender under new rules. The monthly fee for each home will be fixed. The proposal was approved at the North City board meeting on December 21.

Mayor Atiqul Islam told Prothom Alo that it doesn’t matter who got the job of collecting household waste and who didn’t. Whether or not people receive the service is the main problem. New management will be introduced experimentally in some districts. If successful, it will be launched in another neighborhood. People will be able to report through the app if they charge more than the prescribed rate. If more money is taken, action will be taken against them.

According to those who have long been involved in garbage collection, the city corporation is taking such an initiative to bring the work of garbage collection under the control of the ruling party leaders, workers and councilors. It is suspected that the signature of the neighborhood councilor is required on the application form to participate in the tender.

Waste collection has already started in Dhaka South City under this rule. People from the ruling party and councilors have found jobs in most of the districts. These companies were instructed to charge Rs 30 per store and Rs 100 per house. But in most areas there are accusations of taking money at will.

Akhter Mahmud, president of the Bangladesh Institute of Planners, an organization of urban planners, told Prothom Alo that the city corporation lacks oversight on issues such as the suffering of citizens. City corporations must have specific policies and strict supervision in the performance of the garbage collection task.
