Coronavirus: What is the potential for vaccine production in Bangladesh?

Now the question is, what is the country’s capacity to produce the coronavirus vaccine if the technology is brought in from abroad?

Health Minister Zahid Malek says that some of the country’s private pharmaceutical companies have that capacity and willingness.

They have also contacted the Ministry of Health about it. The government is also discussing the matter with the vaccine manufacturers. “

Globe Biotech Limited, a Bangladeshi company, is trying to develop a coronavirus vaccine on its own. They are awaiting the experimental application of this tick called ‘Bangavax’.

According to the World Health Organization, there are 56 vaccines for the coronavirus in clinical development around the world.

The Sputnik-V vaccine was introduced in Russia in early December. The vaccine from the US company Pfizer and the German research company Bioentech has been approved in the UK. The Pfizer vaccine has also been approved for emergency use in the United States. Vaccination has also started in these two countries. The modern vaccine manufactured in the United States on December 19 has also been approved in that country.

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is still pending approval. The government of Bangladesh has already signed an agreement with the Seram Institute of India to purchase 30 million doses of the vaccine. The vaccine is expected to arrive in Bangladesh between January and February.

Major General Mahbubur Rahman, director general of the Department of Drug Administration, said in a function Friday that they were hopeful that the coronavirus vaccine could be developed in the country by bringing technology from those who are developing it.

“Several private pharmaceutical companies in our country have the capacity to manufacture vaccines. Once the technology is transferred, production will begin in the country ”.

Health officials say that while Bangladesh has the capacity to make vaccines with technology and ingredients, the whole issue depends on the interest of the company that made the vaccines and approval from the World Health Organization.

Health Minister Zahid Malek told bdnews24.com that all companies that have agreed to vaccinate have been given the condition that Bangladesh be given the opportunity to produce vaccines.

“Our condition is that if we have the facility, they will allow Bangladesh to manufacture the vaccine. Because not everyone has the facilities to make the whole world. We have also discussed the matter with our local companies.”

Professor Mirzadi Sebrina Flora, a member of the Coronavirus Vaccines Working Group of the Ministry of Health and Additional Director General of the Department of Health, says that the new coronavirus vaccine has raised hopes around the world. But the exact details of how long the vaccine will protect the human body are not yet known. As a result, it is difficult to say how long the vaccine will last.

“(The coronavirus) does not have a long life. The efficacy of the modern vaccine is expected to be three months and that of Oxford-Sputnik two years. In that case, after two years of vaccination, it will not be understood if its effectiveness is really two years ”.

Dr. Sebrina Flora said that it has become quite clear that vaccines will not provide long-term protection. And that is why the country may need to manufacture vaccines.

“If ordinary people have to be vaccinated regularly, then the country must have a production system. EDCL (Essential Drugs Company Limited) has not yet started vaccine production under the government’s initiative. Some private pharmaceutical products have this capacity; I learned that a setup that could produce coronavirus vaccines was preparing them. The government will help them in this regard. “

In the pharmaceutical industry, Bangladesh, as a least developed country, may legally manufacture some drugs developed locally in other countries in accordance with the provisions of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Intellectual Property Rights or the Aspects of Trade Rights. trade-related intellectual property (TRIPS).

With this installation, several Bangladeshi companies have started remediation production by the US company Gilead Sciences.

However, in the case of the coronavirus vaccine, the opportunity will not coincide, said the deputy director of the Department of Drug Administration. Salahuddin.

He told bdnews24.com that benefits would not be available for new and investigational drugs.

Covid-19: ‘Coming in June’ Another 60 million doses of vaccine

“Once the coronavirus vaccine is developed, it goes through several tests. It is extremely expensive and time-consuming. However, the vaccines that have been approved so far, maybe two or three more will arrive in two or three months. if we can bring the vaccine components, then those who have a vaccine plant will be able to do so. Incepta and Popular Pharmaceuticals have the capacity to manufacture vaccines in Bangladesh. “

Rabbur Reza, COO of Beximco Pharmaceuticals Limited, told bdnews24.com that several major pharmaceutical companies had ready-made production lines for vaccines; But it all depends on the approval of the ticker.

“If it is approved, we can start the process. We have to go to the alliance with the company that invented the vaccine. We have to take away the technology.”

Rabbur Reza said that Beximco will not make a vaccine at this time. However, the ‘installation’ has remained ready.

“As long as we know that this vaccine can be made, we can do it very quickly.”

The Oxford-made vaccine will arrive in Bangladesh via Beximco when production begins at the Seram Institute in India.

Additionally, the World Health Organization, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI), and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) have launched Covid-19 Vaccines Globalx, a non-profit organization called Covid-19 .

Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam said on Monday the government expects to receive 60 million doses of vaccine under Covax by June next year.
