On Saturday, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and scientists announced the discovery of a new form of coronavirus in the country, saying the strain was 80% more contagious.

The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany and Italy imposed various restrictions, including a ban on flights from the UK, Reuters reported Sunday.

France has banned entry from the UK for the next 48 hours starting Sunday night. People transporting goods by road, sea, rail and air will also be subject to the ban, the country said.

Germany, Italy and the Netherlands have banned flights to the UK.

Ireland said it had imposed restrictions on flights and ferries to the neighboring country since midnight Sunday. Initially, the ban will continue for 48 hours, they said.

Belgium said it had banned trains and flights from the UK, including the popular Eurostar service, since midnight Sunday.

“As a precautionary measure, the ban will remain in effect for at least 24 hours,” Prime Minister Alexandra Doc told VRT television. We will see later if any further action is required. “

Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza said: “The type of covid recently discovered in London is worrying. Our scientists also need to prove it. We have chosen the most prudent path.”

Italy has banned all types of flights departing from the UK. Additionally, the country has banned anyone who has visited Britain in the past 14 days from entering Italy.

The German government has banned all flights to the UK from midnight on Sunday.

“This (this virus mutation) has yet to be found in Germany, but of course we take the reports from Britain very seriously,” German Health Minister Jens Ispan told state media ARD.

The Netherlands has banned all passenger flights from the UK since Sunday and said it would remain in effect until January 1.

The Austrian government also plans to ban flights from the UK, according to the country’s media, citing the Health Ministry. On the other hand, Spain also wants to decide on the suspension of UK flights in coordination with EU countries, said the country’s foreign minister.

Sweden says it is preparing to decide whether to impose a travel ban on the UK.

Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic have also announced plans to ban flights to the UK.
