Chittagong: The government is building a tunnel at the bottom of the Karnafuli River at a cost of around Tk 10,000 crore to connect the port city of Chittagong and Anwara in southern Chittagong to make the port city of Chittagong a model of ‘one city, two cities’ similar to the Chinese city of Shanghai.

When the construction of this two-tube tunnel is completed, the vehicles will be able to travel at a speed of 60 km per hour with 4 lanes.

The work is not limited to the manufacture of tubes. Major work is underway on both banks of the river, including the construction of connecting roads and overpasses. Domestic and foreign engineers and workers work 24 hours a day.

About 900 workers work day and night on the tunnel construction project. Of these, 600 are Bangladeshi and 290 are Chinese citizens.

Once the tunnel is built, the development of the proposed industrial zone on the east bank of the Karnafuli River will be accelerated and enhanced and an easy communication system will be established with the city of Chittagong, the port and the Chittagong airport located in the western shore.

On February 24, 2019, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the construction of the Bangabandhu Tunnel. So far, 81 percent of the project has been completed. The rest of the work will be completed in 2022, project officials said.
