Justice Minister Anisul Haque said the decision would be made after considering the health of BNP president Khaleda Zia and what was written in the request for an extension of her release.

The minister was answering a question from reporters after an online cabinet meeting in the cabinet conference room at the secretariat on Monday (August 30).

Khaleda Zia, who was convicted in two corruption cases, was temporarily released on March 25. She was free for six months. This period will end on September 25. Earlier, on behalf of the family, Brother Shamim Eskander requested an extension last Tuesday.

When asked about the matter, the justice minister said that Khaleda Zia is not on bail. No court granted bail. Last March, her family made a request to the Interior Minister to release Khaleda Zia from jail under an executive order for her treatment.

Anisul Haque said that the Prime Minister had given us guidance on humanitarian grounds to suspend her sentence (that of Khaleda) under Section 4011 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and release her for six months. He was released on March 25 by that order.

The Minister of Justice said that the Minister of the Interior told me that he had received a request. Six months will end on September 24. They wanted an extension. The Minister of the Interior sent me a copy of that request. But it hasn’t reached me yet. We will consider when we arrive. We will make a decision considering your health condition and what is written on the application.

Khaleda Zia was imprisoned for more than two years in the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust corruption cases. Following the family’s statement, the government suspended Khaleda Zia’s sentence for six months and released her on March 25.
