A ‘public hearing’ was held on Saturday on whether the public library and auditorium at Comilla Bir Chandranagar (City Hall) will be preserved as antiques or whether a modern building will be demolished. 36 people from different classes and professions in the district gave their opinion on stage. They all voted in favor of demolishing the town hall and constructing modern buildings. Most of the speakers are supporters of Bahauddin Bahar, a deputy from the Sadar constituency, who is the leader of the metropolitan Awami League and has taken the initiative to construct a new building on the city hall site.

Bahar said: “Many say that the town hall is owned by the Maharaja of Agartala. The Maharaja of Agartala gave the land for a taka. But the Maharaja of Agartala did not build this building. The town hall and the club work in tin houses. It was rebuilt in 1933. It is now in a dilapidated state.
