Despite the feud on the border, China has started importing rice from neighboring India. Indian industry officials told Reuters China had taken the step after receiving a price waiver offer from India amid a supply shortfall.
India is the world’s largest rice exporter and China is the largest importer. Beijing imports about 4 million tons of rice every year. China has avoided buying rice from India for so long citing quality problems.
But amid tensions between the two countries over border disputes in the Himalayas, China began buying rice from India for the first time in three decades.
President of the Association of Rice Exporters of India. V. Krishna Rao said, “This is the first time that China has bought rice. After seeing the quality of the Indian crops, they will probably buy more from next year.
According to Indian industry officials, Indian traders have agreed to export 100,000 tonnes of broken rice at a price of around £ 300 per tonne during the period from December to February.
