If it wants to compete, China is capable of inflicting more serious military losses on India than in the past. Amid border tensions between the two nuclear-armed countries, the report was published Tuesday in the Chinese state newspaper Global Times.On Monday, New Delhi officials said Indian forces had thwarted attempts by Chinese troops to seize the mountains along the disputed border in the western Himalayas.
On the same day, a Chinese military spokesman demanded that India withdraw its troops. According to Beijing, India is illegally crossing the border between the two countries.
The Global Times editorial said: “India … has said they are influencing Chinese military activity.”
“The very word ‘affected’ proves that the Indian army was the first to take offensive action, and the Indian army is the first to take the position.”
The editorial further said, “India is facing ‘strong China’ and New Delhi should not dream of getting Washington’s support on this issue.”
“But if India wants to compete, China has much more equipment and power than India. If India wants a military showdown, the PLA (People’s Liberation Army) will be forced to inflict more serious losses on the Indian army than in 1972.
The Global Times publishes the People’s Daily, the official magazine of the ruling Communist Party of China.
Tensions between the two sides in Ladakh have been simmering for months, Reuters reported.
In June, 20 Indian soldiers were killed in clashes with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley. It was the deadliest military conflict in more than half a century between two powerful neighbors.
Both parties agreed to negotiate peace after the clashes. However, the Indian military has accused Chinese forces of violating the agreement this weekend.
