China bans BBC broadcasts

China has banned BBC World News from broadcasting reports of human rights abuses and torture of Uighur Muslims.

The announcement was made by the China Broadcasting Regulatory Authority on Thursday local time.

China has reportedly criticized news coverage of the Uyghur and Corona viruses.

In addition, the British media regulator Ofcom recently revoked the license of the China Global Television Network (CGTN). The BBC’s ban could also be retaliation for that incident.

The accusation against CGTN was that they violated the rules of the British Broadcasting Regulations.

The BBC says it is disappointed in China’s decision.

Ordinary people couldn’t watch the BBC in China. Its broadcasts were mainly limited to international hotels and some diplomatic areas.

In condemning the BBC’s shutdown, the State Department said it was part of an offensive against free media in China. Source: BBC
