At least 17 members of left-wing student organizations, including two journalists, were injured in a series of BCL attacks on the Dhaka University (DU) campus. The student organization of the ruling party attacked the procession of the Left Alliance at the VC facilities around 6:30 pm
Before the incident, the BCL beat and injured Abid Hasan Russell from the Bangla Tribune at the TSC at around 5:30 pm. Prothom Alo’s reporter Asif Hawlader was injured in the attack on the VC facility at night. Among those injured were Mahmud, Sajeeb Chauhan from the Socialist Student Front, Rafin Joy, a central member of the student union, Dwipa Mallick from the student federation, Shakil Hossain and Tias Azad. The condition of three of the injured is critical.
Asif Hawladar of Prothom Alo has lost his mind. He is being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Abid Hasan Russell from the Bangla Tribune has a blood clot in her right hand. He has been admitted to the Dhaka University Medical Center.
Al-Qadiri Joy, coordinator of the Progressive Students Alliance, told The Daily Star: “The BCL has attacked our peaceful procession. We condemn it.
Bangla Tribune DU reporter Abid Hasan Russell told The Daily Star: “BCL leaders and activists beat me with bamboo and sticks. He was further beaten if he introduced himself as a journalist. My mobile phone was stolen and my identity card was broken.
The president of the Chhatra League, Al Nahyan Khan Joy, and the general secretary, writer Bhattacharya, called more than once to inquire about the allegations, but did not receive a call.
Sanjit Chandra Das, president of the BCL branch of Dhaka University, told The Daily Star that no one from the BCL was involved in the attack. I heard there was an attack on campus. Several journalists were injured in the attack. If anyone from the Chhatra League is involved in the attack, action will be taken subject to investigation.
