Former Chhatak Vice President (female) Upazila Parishad Rashida Begum Nancy has been nominated by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for the position of mayor in the Chhatak township elections. Sunamganj District BNP Chairman and former MP Kalim Uddin Ahmed Milon confirmed the matter.

Meanwhile, the current mayor Abul Kalam Chowdhury has been nominated by the Bangladesh Awami League for the position of mayor. The decision was made at a meeting of the party’s local government nominating board on Friday (December 18). Undersecretary of the Awami League office, Sayem Khan, confirmed the matter.

Abul Kalam Chowdhury has been elected three times in a row in Chhatak Township. In the 2004 municipal elections, he was elected municipal president for the first time with the umbrella symbol. He was in charge until February 18, 2011. In the 2011 elections, Abul Kalam Chowdhury was elected mayor of the municipality with the cup and pepper symbol and was in office until February 8, 2016. In the next elections municipalities held in 2016, he won with the symbolic boat of the party.

Abul Kalam Chowdhury has been elected municipal president once and mayor twice in this municipality. He is currently in charge of the municipal mayor’s office. Abul Kalam Chowdhury, the three-time president-elect and mayor of Chhatak Township, is a resident of the Bagbari area of ​​the city.

On the other hand, the BNP nominee Rashida Begum Nancy is the wife of the former acting mayor of Chhatak municipality, Rajnu Ahmed, and the daughter of the former UP president, Habibur Rahman. Nancy, a resident of the Bagbari area of ​​the city, has also served as an elected representative.

It is worth mentioning that on December 3, the Electoral Commission announced the schedule of 61 municipal elections in the second phase throughout the country. According to the schedule announced by the EC, the last date for the submission of nomination papers in 61 municipalities is December 20. Verification and selection of the nomination paper is December 22. The last date for the withdrawal of candidacy is December 29. The election will be held on January 18.
