Armenia and Azerbaijan have agreed to a ceasefire to overcome the current crisis in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. The two countries agreed to a ceasefire after a 10-hour meeting in Moscow, Russia. The media reported on the BBC.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov formally declared a ceasefire between Azerbaijan and Armenia shortly before 6 a.m. Bangladesh time on Saturday.
Russia’s foreign minister said that after agreeing to a ceasefire, Armenia and Azerbaijan would now begin the next “fruitful” talks.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been embroiled in a new crisis in the Nagorno-Karabakh region since September 27. Then the armed conflict began. As a result, more than three hundred people died and thousands were displaced.
The Russian-brokered ceasefire will take effect at 2pm on Saturday. During the ceasefire, prisoners will be exchanged and bodies will be recovered.
The Nagorno-Karabakh region is controlled by ethnic Armenians. However, the region is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have blamed each other for the worst recent conflict in decades. Both countries were part of the former Soviet Union.
Russia has a military base in Armenia and both countries are members of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, a regional security alliance. However, Russia also has friendships with Azerbaijan. That is why Russia has mediated between the two countries to stop the conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
