After Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a public statement in support of India’s peasant movement, a heated debate has erupted in India about whether he has done the right thing. Just as many Indians welcome Trudeau’s move, a large portion of the country’s netizens are again advising him to stay away from the internal affairs of India.
Many believe that since the majority of the peasant movement in India is Sikh in the Punjab, Trudeau made the statement for purely political reasons to win the support of Sikh descent in Canada.
Whatever the reason, there is no doubt that the Indians are now practically two-thirds focused on Trudeau’s remarks. Earlier Monday, in a Facebook interaction marking the anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, the prime minister of Canada commented that the situation in India was becoming alarming due to the peasant movement.
He also said that Canada will always support any peaceful protest anywhere in the world. Sikh members of the Trudeau Cabinet and other Sikh leaders of the Liberal Party were also present at that virtual meeting. Within hours of the comments surfacing, India’s Foreign Ministry issued a counter-statement saying it was “completely undesirable” to poke fun at the internal affairs of a democratic country.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Anurag Srivastava said the Canadian leadership should refrain from making such comments without knowing it. But many Indians began posting on social media in support of Trudeau’s comments.
Prashant Bhushan, a senior Supreme Court attorney and rights activist, tweeted: “I am very happy that Trudeau has opened his mouth in favor of farmers’ rights in India. All world leaders must defend democratic rights in all countries. Prashant Bhushan also made it clear that he does not consider this issue to be an internal Indian matter. Source: BBC.
