Tithi Sarkar, a student temporarily expelled from Jagannath University (JU) accused of insulting religion, eloped and married. Tithi thought that by imposing responsibility for the kidnapping on someone, he would get relief from the incident of hurting religious sentiments and the flow of events would be diverted.
The police Department of Criminal Investigation (CID) said so at a press conference on Thursday (November 12) after arresting Tithi, who was missing for more than two weeks before being temporarily expelled from the university. Tithi’s husband’s distant uncle, Shiplu Mallick, Debashish Roy, was arrested at his home in Narsingdi on Wednesday (November 11).
At the briefing, the CID said that Tithi Sarkar, a student in the Department of Zoology at Jagannath University for the 2016-17 academic year, used her Facebook ID to share provocative religious posts, comments and information on several occasions. As a result, the ordinary students of Jagannath University began to agitate and demonstrate against him. On October 26, 2005, the Tithi government was temporarily expelled from the university under the authority of the Vice Chancellor under Section 10 (11) of the JOB Act 2005 on the charge of insulting religion, subject to the approval of the Labor union. Tithi Sarkar also received a temporary resignation from the post of secretary to the office of the Jagannath University branch of the Bangladesh Student Rights Council.
It was further said at the briefing that (in the wake of the allegations) Tithi left her home in Pallabi in the capital on October 25 and contacted her boyfriend Shiplu Mallick and moved to Bagerhat. There he married Shiplu and settled in Bagerhat. Then he came to Dhaka on November 9. Later, Shiplu’s distant uncle, Debashish Roy, moved into their home in Narsingdi. After confirming his whereabouts, Tithi was arrested Wednesday by the CID cyber police team.
According to the CID, on October 31, the CID cyber monitoring team noticed that a false post titled ‘Jagannath University student Tithi Sarkar was rescued from the fourth floor of the CID office in Malibagh with his hands and feet tied ‘was being shared on social networks Facebook. The news quickly went viral on various IDs and Facebook pages. In fact, no such incident occurred within the CID.
Cyber police initiated activities to take legal action against rumor mongers. Following this, the cyber police arrested Niranjan Baral, one of the rumor mongers from the Banasree area of Rampura on November 2. A case was filed against Niranjan Baral and several other unidentified persons under the Digital Security Law at the DMP’s Paltan Police Station.
During the investigation of the case with the Cyber Police Center, secret information was found that the Tithi government was voluntarily staging the arrest / kidnapping drama in secret. He thought that by secretly placing the responsibility for his abduction on others, he would alleviate the trauma of religious sentiment and divert the course of events.
According to the CID, Tithi Sarkar and Shiplu Mallick will be arrested and sent to court on November 2 in a CID case related to hurting religious sentiments and creating a public order situation under the Paltan Police Station Digital Security Act. An application for pretrial detention will be filed against them in court.
Citing the country’s people as extremely peaceful and non-communal, CID officials said the general public was urged not to believe any information and news against communalism, violence, and extremism without proper verification.
