During the crown lock, the prices of several daily staples rose, but the prices of all types of chickens fell. Now that the corona effect has decreased a lot, everything is normal, but the price of chicken is suddenly like a ‘crazy horse’. In the last month and a half, the price of chicken has risen 6 percent. The price of golden chicken is the one that has risen the most.
Vendors say the stalled social events in Corona have now started all at once. Before, the demand for chicken used to increase only on Fridays and Saturdays, but now it is increasing every day. On the closing day, the demand increased a lot. In the middle, the retail price of broiler chicken rose to Rs 180. Now, of course, five to ten rupees less. But even more than any other year.
Farmers say that in addition to the increased demand for social events, including weddings, another reason for the increase in chicken prices is the increase in the prices of poultry feed. They say that as a result of the increase in soybean prices on the international market, the price of soybean meal, the main raw material for poultry feed, has risen from 13 to 15 Tk per kg. The average price of food has risen to Rs 5 per kg. Apart from this, they are also observing the decrease in the growth rate of the chickens and the low production of chickens due to the weather. Many people think that the increase in the price of beef can also generate a greater demand for chicken. However, they expect the price of chicken to drop before Ramadan.
Rabeya, a garment worker in Mugdar in the capital, said chicken used to be the food of the poor because of low prices. Like beef, chicken became the food of the rich. Now the chickens don’t get too many leaves. Motijheel Bank official Harunur Rashid said: “The price of chicken is beyond the scope of other daily necessities. Income has not increased. My two sons liked chicken so they bought more. I am buying less now because the price has gone up ”. Sarwar, a small businessman from Maniknagar, said: They must finish the program within the stipulated budget.
In Mugda, Malibagh, Bashundhara Gate of the capital, the raw materials market and other retail markets can be seen, the market sells broilers at 145 to 155 rupees per kg. According to the Commercial Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), the retail price of broiler chicken in the country has increased by 30 percent. At this time last year, the price of broiler chicken was Rs 110-120 per kg.
Kazi Atiq, owner of the Bismillah Chicken House in the Sayed Ali supermarket in the Bashundhara Gate area, said: ‘On the one hand, the demand has suddenly increased, on the other hand, the supply of chicken is low. As a result, the market is under pressure on both sides. The price is also going up. But now it does not increase. The above price is the same. Osman Gani from Bhai Bhai Chicken Store in the market said that previous traders used to bring more chickens than they wanted. Now bring less than you want. The prices are also high. As a result, we have to sell at a higher price.
According to the National Poultry Farm Protection Council of Bangladesh (BPKRJP) and Poultry Professionals Bangladesh (PPB), all types of poultry from the farm go to the wholesale market or directly to the retail market in the big market. According to his information, broilers were sold yesterday at Tk 123-125 per kg from farms around Dhaka. A month ago it was 115-120 rupees per kg. On January 15, the broilers were sold for Rs 105 / kg from the farms. In other words, the price of broilers has increased by as much as 25 percent in a month and a half at the farm level.
Currently, the farm-level price of golden chicken is 260 Tk per kg, which was 190 rupees per kg a month ago. In mid-January, that is, a month and a half ago, at the farm level, golden breed chickens were sold at 150 Tk per kg. In other words, the price of this breed of chicken has increased by as much as 6 percent in a month and a half. Vendors say the price of this chicken has risen due to its use at social events.
Khandaker Mohsin, secretary general of the National Council for the Protection of Poultry Farms, said that social events generally take place in January-February. This increases the demand for chickens by 7 to 8 percent. This time, the demand for chicken increased between 15 and 16 percent, as programs that were stagnant due to the crown began simultaneously. On the other hand, the price of poultry feed has risen 5 Tk per kg due to the increase in soybean prices on the international market. Before, food was available at an average price of 42 Tk, but now it is around 48 Tk. Also, the average weight of chickens has increased less due to the weather during winter. In general, the chicken market is booming due to increased demand, tight supply and rising production costs. However, the price may drop in mid-March.
