Transport workers say that despite having adequate buses on the Sylhet-Srimangal and Habiganj routes, BRTC is launching new bus services. The matter has not been reported or discussed with any of the transport workers or employers. BRTC cannot start bus service on any road if it so chooses.

Organizing Secretary of the Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association and General Secretary of the Sylhet District Road Transport Owners Association, Shah. Ziaul Kabir said: ‘Let BRTC introduce the buses, we have no problem with that. However, there is adequate transportation on this road. How many buses will be on the road when they run? Our employers did not inform the association or the transport workers’ organization about them. It would have been better if they had informed us earlier. You have created confusion without informing us. Regarding the vandalism, he said: ‘There was no incident of vandalism of any vehicle. We meet to solve the problem.

BRTC Sylhet Depot manager Zulfiqar Ali said: “We are working according to the ministry’s instructions considering the suffering of the passengers on these two routes. Initially, two buses were supposed to start running. But I faced obstacles and attacks while throwing one on Sunday. This led to the vandalism of a government vehicle that I used. Later, the police arrived at the scene and controlled the situation. Meetings are now taking place with the leaders of the Transportation Owners Association and labor leaders. The decision will be made next time.

Dakshin Surma Police Station Officer-in-Charge (CO) Akhter Hossain said: “The police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control. Workers obstructing BRTC buses have wrecked a vehicle. We are on the scene. Legal action will be taken if a complaint is made in this regard.
