Members of the Railway Security Force (RNB) beat and injured a traffic police officer in Rajshahi over a dispute over ticket verification. The victim police officer has filed a case against five members of the RNB at the train police station.

The case was brought up at the Rajshahi Railway Police Station on Thursday night. Four members of the RNB and one other unidentified person have been charged in the case. The Officer-in-Charge (CO) of the Rajshahi Railway Police Station, Shah Kamal, confirmed the matter.

The defendants in the case are RNB’s Naik Qayyum Ali, Sepoy Shahin Alam, Mizanur Rahman and Belal Hossain. The police are trying to arrest the accused. The victim was identified as Riaz Hasan, 35 years old. He works in the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) traffic department.

Previously, he was beaten at the Rajshahi train station on Wednesday night. Later he was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RAMEC). After being released from the hospital, he went to the police station and filed a case.

When asked about the incident, OC Shah Kamal Train Police Station said: “Five relatives of Officer Riaz arrived in Rajshahi on a train from Bangladesh on Thursday night.” Riaz and his wife went to the station to pick up relatives. On the way back from the platform with relatives, the RNB members want to see tickets for them. Then the 5 passenger tickets are displayed. But the bailiff and his wife were taken to the ticket collector (TC) as they had no tickets. The sheriff later introduced himself and said that he and his wife were not passengers on the train. They came to pick up relatives. After hearing this, TC released them.

But the RNB members were unhappy on the issue. As soon as he left TC’s room, the RNB members insulted the police officer. The cop went to complain to TC again about the impudence. RNB members can inquire about the complaint. As soon as TC left the room with the complaint, they began to beat him with the butt of a rifle and the baton in his hand. Hence, when they took him to the RNB office to be beaten more, the victim saw the police and told them: “Brother, save me, I’m a policeman too.” The railway police ran and rescued him from RNB. Later, GRP Police Officer-in-Charge (CO) Shah Kamal ordered that he be rushed to hospital for treatment.

Shortly after being informed of the incident, several senior police officers came to the scene. He also offered to discuss the matter with the RNB commander-in-chief, police said. But the Commander in Chief did not agree to come saying some problems. Subsequently, subject to the investigation of the incident, traffic officer Riaz filed a lawsuit against the 5 members of the RNB on behalf of the police.

The CO of the GRP police station said: “No one could be arrested because the defendants were on the run. Efforts are being made to arrest them.” However, CCTV footage is needed to identify the anonymous RNB member. The request has been made together with the railway authorities. It can also be identified as soon as you get CCTV footage.

Said the Commander in Chief of the RNB. Ashabul Islam said: “Such incidents are unpleasant. After hearing the matter, I instructed those involved to stop working and report to them immediately. We have formed an investigative committee made up of two deputy commanders Shah Alam Mollah (Sadar) and Ataur Rahman Pokshi. They have been instructed to submit their report within 7 business days. They will be tried subject to investigation.
