The split in the BNP-led National Unity Front is due to a dispute between Secretary General Reza Kibria, Subrata Chowdhury, Abu Sayeed and Mostafa Mohsin Montu.
After the Fifth National Council last year, there was a two-party dispute over the unavailability of seats in the Central Committee. There were also incidents of expulsion and counter-expulsion.
Then the acting chairman of the last Abu Sayeed committee, Subrata Chowdhury, and former Secretary-General Mohsin Montu called an extended meeting on September 26 on behalf of the party.
Reza Kibria, general secretary of the Popular Forum, called the meeting “unconstitutional”.
A press release signed by Kamal Hossain and Reza Kibria sent to the media on Tuesday said that the people’s forum had nothing to do with the meeting.
On the other hand, Subrata Chowdhury says they will invite the founding chairman of the party, Kamal Hossain, to the extended meeting.
After leaving the Awami League, Kamal Hossain formed a popular forum on November 4, 1993 with Saif Uddin Ahmed Manik, who had left the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB).
When Manik died a few years ago, Montu, who came from the Awami Juba League, was appointed the party’s general secretary.
The party registered with the Electoral Commission formed an alliance with the BNP in the eleventh general election and went to the first parliament. Mokabbir Khan won the Sylhet-2 seat with the party symbol ‘Emerging Suz’.
The party has been embroiled in controversy since the most successful election in its history.
Reza Kibria told bdnews24.com: “According to the constitution, they cannot call such a large meeting. This is completely unconstitutional.”
He said: “The leaders of any district committee of the Popular Forum will not attend the meeting. I have spoken with the leaders of each district committee. The meeting will be with some people from Gazipur and Elephant Road. “

Subrata Chowdhury responded by saying: “He (the Secretary General) himself does not lead the party according to the constitution. The constitution requires the editorial board to meet in 30 days, the standing committee in 60 days, and the central committee in 90 days.
He did not hold a single meeting within a year of the announcement of the full 101-member committee on May 5, 2019. Sixty members of the Central Committee have written to call these meetings. On the contrary, 13 of them have been issued amparo for cause and four have been expelled from the party. The team can’t go on like this. It’s too much. “
Reza Kibria said: “They don’t want to accept any constitution. In this way, let’s say a team or an organization, it can’t work. “
He claimed that he started touring different districts after becoming secretary general. However, it was interrupted by the coronavirus epidemic.
“I have visited various districts including Chittagong, Mymensingh, Chandpur, Noakhali, Rajshahi and Sylhet to activate the committees. We have active organizing work in about 35 districts, we were working in more districts. Meanwhile, political activities were suspended due to the outbreak. of Kovid-19 “.
Subrata Chowdhury alleges that Reza Kibria arbitrarily runs the party.

In addition to Reza Kibria, the rest of the Central Committee members, including President Kamal Hossain, have been invited to the extended meeting on Sunday, they said. Letters have been sent to delegates across the country.
When asked what he would do if Kamal Hossain did not attend, Subrata Chowdhury said: “If he does not come, the next course of action will be decided in consultation with the leaders present.”
“We want to do politics, we want the right to practice politics normally. The formation of the popular forum was that everything will be done in the light of transparency through discussion. That is why the president of this party does not have the exclusive power that other parties have, ”he said.

Regarding the separation of Subrata Chowdhury, Reza Kibria said: “Everyone has the right to do politics. They can form any team. But no one has the right to hold a meeting under the name of the popular forum. “
Disputes in the popular forum have been made public since Reza Kibria was appointed general secretary, excluding Montu from the committee announced after last year’s council. The two groups opposed the Central Committee meeting. The leaders of the other party spoke openly against Reza Kibria.
At one point, Reza Kibria expelled all four. They are the central leaders Abdul Hasib Chowdhury, Khan Siddiqur Rahman, Helal Uddin and Latiful Bari Hamim.
Subrata Chowdhury also counter-expelled Secretary General Reza Kibria, Central Committee members Mohsin Rashid, A and M Shafiqullah, and Mushtaq Ahmed.
On March 4, the president of the Gana Forum, Kamal Hossain, dissolved the central committee and formed a convening committee of two members. He himself became the coordinator and appointed Reza Kibria as general secretary.
