BNP-backed mayoral candidate Anisur Rahman Talukder has boycotted the Kalai municipal by-elections in Joypurhat on various charges, including expelling officers from the center.
He announced the boycott at 12:30 pm on Saturday (October 10) during the vote.
Anisur Rahman said: ‘Our officers have been evicted from all centers for showing fear. When the voters go to cast their votes, the people of the Awami League mayoral candidate are voting in the regatta preventing them from voting. Despite the complaints, management is not paying attention.
The BNP candidate further said: ‘I have brought voters to the center after explaining a lot that the first EVM system was implemented in the area. But the administration and Awami League leaders and activists have conspired to rig the vote by expelling agents from the center to win the party’s mayoral candidate, Taufiqul Islam Belal.
Voting for the by-election for the post of mayor of Kalai Township in Joypurhat will take place from 9 am on Saturday (October 10) through the first electronic voting machine (EVM) in 9 centers. The position was vacated following the death of the Mayor of Kalai Township, Halimul Alam John, on February 5.
In this Kalai Township by-election, Taufiqul Islam Talukder Belal with the Awami League ship symbol and Anisur Rahman Talukder with the BNP rice sheaf symbol and independent candidate Mamunur Rashid are vying for mayor.
Of the total of 13,521 voters in the municipality, 7,062 are female voters and 6,449 are male voters. In addition to maintaining the situation of law and order, members of the RAB, the police and the BGB have been deployed to make the elections free, fair and neutral.
