A bomb blast near the northern city of Aden killed at least five Iraqis and injured dozens more, authorities said. Reuters quoted local security sources on Wednesday.

According to eyewitnesses and Saudi media sources, members of the cabinet, including Prime Minister Moin Abdul Malik, have been evacuated to the city’s presidential palace.

Mohammed al-Attab from Al Jazeera in the capital Sanaa said: “The exact number of victims has not yet been determined, but sources said the blast was very powerful.

An AFP correspondent at the scene said two explosions were heard. “At least two explosions were heard as cabinet members got off the plane,” he said.

Saudi Arabia’s state television, Akhbariya, showed vehicles destroyed by the blast and pieces of broken glass on the ground. White smoke was also seen rising from the scene.

On December 16, the internationally recognized Yemeni government and southern separatists agreed to form a new government based on shared power. The new government arrived in the southern city of Aden on Wednesday, just days after taking office in Saudi Arabia.

The new government has been formed under the umbrella of Saudi Arabia. In 2014, when Iranian-backed Houthi rebels seized the capital Sanaa, Saudi Arabia formed a military alliance and launched an operation in Yemen.

The new 24-member cabinet was sworn in by Yemeni President Abdur Rabbu Mansour Hadi on Saturday. The new cabinet was formed as part of an alliance against the rebels occupying much of the north.

President Hadi has been living in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, since the Houthi rebels took over the capital, Sanaa.

Thousands of people have died and millions have been made homeless in the five-year war that has raged in Yemen. It was through this war that the worst humanitarian catastrophe in the world, described by the United Nations, began in the country.

The new government includes supporters of President Hadi and other parties, including the separatist Southern Transitional Council.

Although the new government was formed with the help of Riyadh, united against the Houthis, the consensus government could collapse at any time due to internal conflicts.
