Reporting that the BNP will not participate in the upcoming local government elections, the party’s general secretary, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, said that the BNP will not participate in the upcoming Parishad Union (UP) elections as a party.

He said this at a press conference at the BNP president’s office in Gulshan on Sunday afternoon.

Fakhrul added: “We will not nominate anyone in the local government elections in the future.” He said the party’s standing committee meeting last Saturday condemned the government’s overt interference in the recent local government by-elections in several Upazila Parishads and in all municipal elections and the total failure of the Electoral Commission to hold fair elections. .

The BNP general secretary said that BNP participated in local elections under extremely unfavorable conditions because it believed in democracy. But no election of the current Electoral Commission is neutral, free, fair and acceptable, it is proven. Its main task (CE) is to implement the agenda of the unelected government.

The BNP has called a rally to protest the death of writer Mushtaq Ahmed while in jail in a case under the Digital Security Act and the decision to revoke the title of former President Ziaur Rahman. Chhatra Dal and BNP leaders and activists began gathering in the Press Club area starting at 10 am on Sunday. They took to the streets around 11:15 pm. At that moment the police arrested them. At one point, the police started beating him. At one point, the leaders and activists were dispersed by police batons. Then the leaders and activists began throwing bricks at the police. The police fired blank shots and tear gas to disperse them.

In this context, said the BNP general secretary, the police deliberately attacked the student party rally at the National Press Club today. Through digital law, the government has restricted freedom of expression. The BNP general secretary demanded the immediate repeal of the law. At the same time, Mirza Fakhrul demanded a judicial investigation into the death of the writer Mushtaq Ahmed in custody.
