BNP Vice President and former Minister of State Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin was sent to jail for a corruption case. Judge ASM Ruhul Imran of Dhaka’s Court of Special Judges 2 denied bail on Sunday after he surrendered and requested bail.
On November 19 last year, the High Court upheld Mir Nasir’s 13-year sentence and the three-year sentence of his son Mir Helal in a corruption case. They were asked to surrender there (judicial court) within three months after the Superior Court verdict reached the Judicial Court. According to the order, the defendant Mir Mohammad Nasir surrendered to the court and requested bail, but the judge denied him bail and ordered his imprisonment.
Mir Helal, Mir Nasir’s son, surrendered on October 26 and requested bail. Judge ASM Ruhul Imran of Dhaka Special Judge Court 2 denied bail and ordered that they be sent to jail.
On March 8, 2007, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a lawsuit against Mir Nasir and his son Mir Helal at the Gulshan Police Station in the capital on charges of illegal acquisition of assets and concealment of assets. The court sentenced Mir Nasir to 13 years and Mir Helal to three years in prison.
Mir Nasir and Mir Helal appealed to the High Court against the verdict. In August 2010, the High Court overturned the sentences of Mir Nasir and Mir Helal.
The ACC appealed the Superior Court’s decision. Following the hearing, the Appeals Chamber overturned the Superior Court judgment on July 3, 2014. At the same time, a separate appeal by the father and son against the judgment was ordered to be heard again in the Superior Court. After the hearing, the Superior Court delivered its verdict on November 19 of last year.
