Gazipur Sreepur municipality elections to be held in the first stage, the candidate for mayor nominated by the BNP. Shahidullah Shahid died of a coronavirus infection. He died at the Hospital Square in the capital at 11:20 am on Wednesday (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilahi Raziun). He was 45 years old at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.
Due to his death, the mayoral election in Sreepur Township was postponed on December 26. Election for this position will take place later with the announcement of the new schedule. However, the elections for the positions of councilors will be held at the scheduled time (December 28). Gazipur District Elections Officer and Returning Officer Kazi said this afternoon. Istafizul Haque Akand postponed the election for the office of mayor by public notice.
Gazipur District BNP convener Fazlul Haque Milon told Kaler Kanth that Shahidullah Shahid was admitted to High Care Hospital in Uttara after contracting crown. He was admitted to Hospital Square last Monday after his condition worsened. There they put him on life support.
Billal Hossain Bepari, Gazipur Juba Dal District Organizing Secretary, said Shahidullah Shahid suffered from asthma, tuberculosis or tuberculous lymphadenitis and diabetes. He recovered from tuberculosis. After announcing the schedule, the district, upazila and the municipal BNP nominated Shahidullah Shahid for the position of mayor at a joint meeting and submitted his name to the party center. Meanwhile, he was diagnosed with a coronavirus infection. Later, after receiving the nomination from the party center, BNP leaders collected and sent nomination documents on his behalf while he was in treatment at the hospital. After the selection on December 3, the returning officer declared his nomination valid.
Shahidullah Shahid was also the BNP-nominated mayoral candidate in the Sreepur Township elections on December 31, 2015.
Shahidullah Shahid is the son of the late Yakub Ali Master from Kewa Paschim Khand village in Sreepur municipal area. He was general secretary of the municipal BNP. Today he will be buried in the family cemetery after Janaza on the Esha Mauna High School grounds.
Election for the office of mayor postponed
