BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told reporters after interviewing the candidates at the virtual meeting of the party’s nominating board on Monday.
Habib was also a BNP candidate in the 11th parliamentary elections held in 2016. In that election, he lost to Shamsur Rahman Sharif Dilu of the Awami League by a margin of 2 lakh of votes.
With the death of former Minister Dilu, by-elections are taking place in the electoral district of Pabna-4, composed of Ishwardi and Atgharia upazilas. Voting will take place there on September 28.
In addition to the Pabna district BNP convener, Habib, Labor leader Ahsan Habib wanted to be nominated as a candidate in the by-elections.
Fakhrul said: “The nominating board and the standing committee chaired by the acting chairman of the party Tareq Rahman has nominated Habibur Rahman Habib in the Pabna-4 constituency.”
BNP Khandaker standing committee members Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Jamiruddin Sarkar, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moin Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Selima Rahman and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku were present at the meeting.
After announcing the decision, Habib told reporters: “On September 28, the people of Pabna-4 will declare liberation war by voting for President Ziaur Rahman, the country’s most popular leader, Begum Khaleda Zia, and arrogance of youth “.
He also urged the government not to resort to any kind of ‘manipulation’ in this election.
Habib, a former president of the Chhatra League, later joined the BNP against their political line.
The Awami League has sent local leader Nuruzzaman Biswas in the Pabna-4 constituency by-election.
