Abul Khair Khan, the BNP-nominated mayoral candidate of Khulna Township, died of coronavirus (Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilahi Raziun). He died at Khulna Medical College Hospital at 3.40pm on Monday.

Said the head of the Corona unit at Khulna Medical College Hospital. Farid Ahmed confirmed the death.

Meanwhile, Abul Khair Khan’s main electoral agent, Abdul Mannan Khan, announced a boycott of the Chalna municipality elections at a press conference this afternoon, alleging irregularities and vote rigging.

Previously, BNP mayoral candidate Abul Khair Khan was admitted to Gazi Medical College Hospital on December 23 after suffering a crown. Later, on December 25, he was admitted to the crown unit of Khulna Medical College Hospital. There he was treated.

In addition to the BNP mayoral candidate Abul Khair Khan, the other three mayoral candidates in Chalna Municipality are Sanat Kumar Biswas of the Awami League, independent candidates Achintya Kumar Mandal, and Gautam Kumar Roy.

The municipality of Chalna was established in November 2004. At that time, the BNP nominated a candidate for mayor. Abul Khair Khan served as a municipal administrator. The current mayor Sanath Kumar Biswas lost to Achintya Kumar Mandal in the 2011 elections. In the 2015 elections, Sanath Biswas won with the support of the Awami League.

The total number of voters in the municipality of Chalna is 12,100. Of these, 5,073 are male voters and 6,238 are female voters.

The vote took place today in 24 municipalities of the country, including Khulna. Voting took place at the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) from 8 am to 4 pm.
