Two Rohingya were killed in shootings and clashes overnight in Kutupalong, the largest Rohingya camp in Ukhia. According to multiple sources, the killings were the result of a long-running dispute between the two warring factions for dominance. The bloody confrontation took place on Saturday night.
The deceased has been identified as Imam Sharif, 32, the son of the late Syed Alam from the D-5 block of Kutupalong camp and Shamsul Alam, 45, the son of the late Yunus from the D-2 block. Ukhia police recovered two bodies from the Camp-2 West D-5 block around 8 a.m. Sunday and sent them to Cox’s Bazar morgue for autopsy.
Abu Taleb and Abdu Rashid, relatives of the slain Rohingya, told reporters that the camp had been carrying out mass extortion under the banner of the Munna Group and an organization called Alekin for a long time. If they don’t pay the ransom, they are kidnapped and beaten to collect the money. There was a lot of tension between the two groups. As a result, 10 people were injured in the clashes between the two parties on Friday night. Due to the incident, the incident started again on Saturday night. During this time, the Rohingya destroyed and set fire to several houses in the camp. At least 17 Rohingya were injured in chases, brick-throwing and shelling. The injured have been admitted to the local MSF and Cox’s Bazar Sadar hospital.
Hafeez Jalal Ahmed, president of the registered camp, said he was gathering among the newly arrived Rohingya. Regular fights, brawls and chases have become the norm between them. The administration cannot control them in any way. He said if it continues like this, the line of bodies here could be longer.
Some villagers living in and around the Rohingya camp complained that the Rohingya carried out terrorist activities with knives, swords and pistols. They couldn’t sleep with the sound of gunfire last night. Having to spend the night in a panic. Which has become a cause for panic for the locals.
The officer in charge of the Ukhia police station, Ahmed Manzur Morshed, said that there have been two cases of murder in this regard. The police are working to arrest the accused.
