Former Kashmir chief minister and leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti, has said that the results of local elections in India-controlled Jammu and Kashmir have “unmasked” the BJP-led central government.
Indian media NDTV“The election results show that the people have not forgotten the repeal of Article 370 of the Constitution or the special status of Kashmir,” he said in an interview.
This is the first election since Jammu and Kashmir was declared a Union Territory in August last year.
In Jammu and Kashmir, the ‘Gupkar Alliance’ of Kashmiri political parties has won a landslide victory over the BJP in the District Development Council (DDC) elections.
To fight the BJP in this year’s DDC elections, Mehbooba Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the National Conference of former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and seven other political parties in Kashmir have formed a ‘secret alliance’.
The alliance, led by former chief minister Farooq Abdullah, won 13 of the 20 districts of Jammu and Kashmir.
Mehbooba Mufti believes that the BJP’s situation would have been more miserable if a level playing field had been maintained in the elections.
Regarding the victory in the elections, the former prime minister said: ‘The people have voted for the alliance. It is a clear message to Delhi that Article 370 is still ingrained in our hearts. We will fight until our last breath. ‘
Mehbooba Mufti also said that he will not run for any election until Section 370 is reinstated.
Mehbooba Mufti said the Gupkar alliance would contest the elections in the future and feared a break with its allies over the sharing of power.
He also said that he would go to the International Court of Justice if necessary.
“We were rivals,” Mehbooba said of the alliance. But we are all united by the highest interest of Jammu and Kashmir. We are from Kashmir at the end of the day. We are not only talking about elections, we are working to recover what was lost.
Regarding participation in the parliamentary elections, he said: ‘In fact, we will sit together and discuss during the parliamentary elections. But I will not be in competition.
Recently, a total of 280 seats were voted in 14 of the 20 districts of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The voting has been carried out in eight phases over 25 days.
