West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen a “target of attack” by the ruling BJP.

University authorities recently complained that Visva-Bharati had land on the border of the home of Nobel-winning economist Amartya Sen in Santiniketan.
Nobel laureate Amartya Sen has alleged that the university rector has been authorized by the central government in the incident.
He said in a statement that the land on which Visva-Bharati owns his house is on long-term lease. There are still many years to expire.
Last Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a speech marking Visva-Bharati’s centenary that university authorities had written to the West Bengal government about the illegal occupation of land. Amartya Sen’s house in Santiniketan is alleged to have been built on the land of ‘Pratichi’ Visva-Bharati.
In response, Amartya Sen said that the Visva-Bharati authorities had never informed him or his family about the land grab.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has alleged that people like Amartya Sen are being targeted for speaking out against the BJP government in the Center. He also apologized to Amartya Sen on behalf of Bengal.
Amartya Sen’s family has been living in Santiniketan for the past decades. That house now bears the name of Amartya Sen. Explaining what Visva-Bharati is doing with the land account after as many days as unethical, Mamata said, “If I have that opportunity, I will be happy if I can give the land to Amartya Sen.” Whatever you say, whatever you say, the state government will be by your side.
Mamata further said that Amartya Sen is the pride of Bengal. Rabindranath Tagore’s Nobel medal was stolen. The CBI has investigated.
