Moscow has dismissed as “absolutely bizarre” claims by some neighboring countries that Russia would gradually annex Belarus to its territory.
Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman at the Russian president’s residence, said in Moscow on Wednesday that there were no plans to annex Belarus to the Russian Federation and that there would be no talks during Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko’s upcoming visit to Moscow.
Peskov added that Lukashenko’s next visit to Moscow will take place in the context of the current political situation in Belarus, as the two countries have excellent close ties.
President Lukashenko was re-elected in the August 9 elections in Belarus. But the opposition parties did not accept the result. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized the results of the Belarus election and expressed support for Lukashenko.
Neighboring Lithuania has granted political asylum to the Belarusian opposition leader Asutkala Nikhatuskaya. Furthermore, Lithuania and Estonia have blacklisted the presidents of Belarus. The two countries have accused Russia of annexing Belarus, as well as the Republic of Crimea.
