The Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib University of Science and Technology (Bashefmubiprabi) has expressed its deep sorrow over the death of Mahbubey Alam, Attorney General of Bangladesh, former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association and lead counsel. Syed Samsuddin Ahmed.
In a message of condolence on Sunday (September 27), the vice chancellor said that as the state’s legal director, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam has performed important state functions with honesty, devotion and sincerity.
“As a renowned attorney, he has played a very skilled role in many legal matters of national importance and has always been dedicated to the legal profession, which will continue to be practiced. We are deeply saddened by the passing of this renowned state attorney.
In his message of condolences, the Vice Chancellor prayed for the forgiveness of the late Mahbubey Alam’s soul and conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family members.
In early September 4, the attorney general’s coronavirus was identified. He was admitted to CMH that day. When his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on September 17. He was also on life support.
Lead attorney Mahbubey Alam was appointed as the country’s 15th Attorney General on January 13, 2009. He held this position until his death.
Mahbubey Alam was born on February 16, 1949 in the village of Mouchamandra in Louhjong upazila de Munshiganj. He obtained a BA in Political Science from Dhaka University in 1986 and an MA in Public Administration in 1989. Mahbubey Alam obtained his LLB degree from the same university in 1982. In 1973, he joined the Bangladesh Bar Association and became a in member of the Dhaka Bar Association.
He was allowed to practice law in the Superior Court Division of the Supreme Court in 1975 and in the Appellate Division in 1970. In 1997, Mahbubey Alam was included as lead attorney in the Appeals Division. He also obtained a Diploma in Constitutional Law and Parliamentary Institutions and Procedures from the Institute of Constitutional and Parliamentary Studies, New Delhi, India in 1989. Mahbubey Alam served as Additional State Attorney General from November 15, 1996 to October 4, 2001.
In 1993-94, he was elected secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association, the highest court bar association in the country. He was elected president of the Illustrious Bar Association in the period 2005-2006.
He also served as Chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council.
Mahbubey Alam was the lawyer in the murder case of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He was the main defender of the State in the cases of the Fifth, Seventh, Thirteenth and Sixteenth Amendments to the Constitution.
Apart from this, he has successfully handled a number of historically important cases such as the BDR mutiny murder case and crimes against humanity during the liberation war and war crimes in the Supreme Court.
